Off-grid solutions in the context of the booming African Telecom market

Infinergia released a full analysis of this market in June 2017. It's based on interview and its proprietary database of off-grid telecom installations on key African countries.

In Africa, telecom operators (telcos) have a significant part of their telecom infrastructure (e.g. telecom sites, cell towers or BTS) with non-existent (off-grid) or poor (bad-grid) electrical supply.

Scope of study:

  • We studied 11 countries representing a 25% of off-grid sites in Africa and almost 60% of off-grid solar installed sites in Africa.
  • The report provides quantitative and qualitative data about power supply situation of telecom infrastructure on each country by operator and tower co. network.
  • We review main categories of electricity power supply technologies: Diesel Generator Set (Genset), hybrid Genset, Photovoltaic, etc.

  • We gathered quantitative data on each operator via desk research and field interviews of all involved actors (operators, tower cos, installers, system suppliers, etc.)
  • We gathered qualitative data via desk research and field interviews of same actors
  • Via a bottom-up approach, we consolidated and crosschecked all data to summarize overall market size.

Countries coverage:

  • Northern Africa : Egypt, Algeria & Morocco
  • Sub-Saharan Africa : Ghana, Nigeria, DRC, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia & South Africa

  • Gain an in-depth understanding of off-grid telecom market in Africa
  • Identify ongoing trends and anticipate growth
  • Obtain data to business decisions and strategic development plans
  • Gain competitive knowledge of leading market players

This report targets solar systems or energy storage vendors, genset vendors, telecom system integrators, etc.

African Off-grid Solar Market Report:

Infinergia released in March 2015 a complete study on African off-grid markets (over 100 pages of data and analysis).

Scope of study:

  • Part 1: Off-grid quantitative dynamics. 33 countries analyzed and ranked according to their Off-grid PV potential (Off-grid PV installed base in MW, scoring, mid-term evolution, maturity scale)
  • Part 2: Rural electrification in Africa. We analyzed 33 African countries by stage of rural electrification, main programs involving off-grid PV deployment as well as policies and regulations.
  • Part 3: Off-grid PV development on 4 market segments analyzed: domestic (Solar Home Systems, solar lighting), communities (schools, health centers, water pumping, solar street-lights) and other industries (Telecom: Base Transceiver Stations, tourism: lodges and hotels/resorts, mining sites, oil & gas and traffic signal). For each segment, we analyzed definition (usage, power range and prices), regional installed capacity (MW & units) and top 5 high potential countries.

  • We used our MOG macro economical model & Off-grid PV installations database to rank countries by off-grid PV potential
  • We gathered quantitative data for each country and segment via desk research and field interviews of all involved actors (ministries, NGO, manufacturer of off-grid products, installers, distributors...)
  • Via a bottom-up approach, we consolidated and crosschecked all data to summarize overall market size.

Country coverage:

  • Northern Africa: Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia
  • Western Africa: Benin, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal
  • Central Africa: Cameroun, Chad, DR Congo,
  • Eastern Africa: Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania,  Uganda
  • Southern Africa: Angola, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe

  • Estimate and quantify potential market by application and country
  • Identify off-grid solar segment, region and country with best future market potential.
  • Understand market trends, drivers & restraints

This report targets solar systems or component manufacturers, system integrators, EPC, resellers, financers.
